Thermal Refuge (appunti di Luca Rossi)
Nel 2016 mi sono trovato casualmente in un centro benessere ricavato da un rifugio antiaereo della seconda Guerra mondiale. Sempre casualmente ho letto un articolo di Angelo Panebianco sul Corriere della Sera. L’articolo spiegava come chiunque conosce la storia sa che la civiltà occidentale ha rappresentato il migliore dei mondi mai esistiti. Attenzione, non il “migliore dei mondi possibili”, ma il migliore dei mondi che l’uomo è mai riuscito a costruire dalla notte dei tempi. Per capire questo basta guardare i livelli di benessere, libertà, sanità eccetera.
Questo non significa voler rimarcare la superiorità della civiltà occidentale ma dialogo e confronto tra i popoli per crescere insieme. Esattamente come non è superiore un atleta che vince rispetto ad un atleta che perde. Semplicemente l’atleta che vince può ispirare quello che ha perso.
L’articolo continuava dicendo come, paradossalmente, i maggiori detrattori dell’Occidente vengono allevati, sostenuti e cullati proprio dallo stesso Occidente che tanto criticano. Intellettuali, critici, artisti che lamentano e criticano il declino occidentale senza mai affrontare (in tempi non sospetti e non quando va di moda) i regimi iraniani, indiani, russi, cinesi, ecc. Regimi dove le libertà essenziali non esistono e dove il benessere del popolo viene sistematicamente sacrificato per la vita del regime. Questa mia esperienza ha dato vita al progetto “Thermal Refuge” dove chiunque, con l’acquisto di un PDF, può vivere questo luogo tanto significativo, e leggere l’articolo originale di Panebianco che ho conservato. E questa lettura proprio nel centro benessere dove significativamente si incontrano oriente e occidente (il bagno turco, l’hamman, la sauna occidentale, l’acqua termale).
Questo progetto è nato a budget zero semplicemente tramite la capacità di allenare nuovi occhi e cambiare prospettiva sulla nostra quotidianità. E’ come se io avesso vestito tutti i ruoli del sistema dell’arte, da spettatore, curatore, artista, fino ad ufficio stampa. Mi viene in mente il Padiglione Italia 2022 di Gian Maria Tosatti realizzato dopo 6 anni da questo progetto, e costato più di 2 milioni di euro. Il progetto di Tosatti, artista allevato nel benessere occidentale, riflette in modo retorico proprio sul declino della civiltà industriale-occidentale. Il padiglione di Tosatti ha bisogno della finzione, del teatro, dell’artificio e del piedistallo. Una fabbrica trasportata con di enormi, lucciole fasulle che sono solo luci elettriche, la musica in filo diffusione, e tutta una serie di altri espedienti teatrali e artificiali. Quando invece la vera sfida e il vero valore, in mano ad ognuno di noi, è la capacità di allenare nuovi occhi, come strumenti fondamentali per affrontare la nostra vita.

In 2016, I accidentally found myself in a wellness centre converted from a World War II air raid shelter. Also by chance, I read an article by Angelo Panebianco in the Corriere della Sera. The article explained how anyone who knows history knows that Western civilisation has been the best of all worlds. Mind you, not the ‘best of all possible worlds’, but the best of worlds that man has ever managed to build since the dawn of time. To understand this, one only has to look at the levels of prosperity, freedom, health etc.
This is not to emphasise the superiority of Western civilisation but dialogue and confrontation between peoples in order to grow together. Just as an athlete who wins is not superior to an athlete who loses. It is simply that the athlete who wins can inspire the one who lost.
The article went on to say how, paradoxically, the greatest detractors of the West are nurtured, supported and cradled by the very same West they criticise so much. Intellectuals, critics, artists who bemoan and criticise the decline of the West without ever confronting (in unsuspected times and not when it is fashionable) the Iranian, Indian, Russian, Chinese, etc. regimes. Regimes where essential freedoms do not exist and where the welfare of the people is systematically sacrificed for the life of the regime. This experience of mine gave birth to the ‘Thermal Refuge’ project where anyone, with the purchase of a PDF, can experience this very significant place, and read the original article by Panebianco that I have kept. And this reading right in the wellness centre where significantly East and West meet (the Turkish bath, the hamman, the western sauna, the thermal water).
This project was born with zero budget simply through the ability to train new eyes and change perspective on our everyday life. It is as if I had dressed all the roles of the art system, from spectator, curator, artist, to press office. I am reminded of Gian Maria Tosatti’s Italian Pavilion 2022, which was realised 6 years after this project and cost more than 2 million euros. Tosatti’s project, an artist bred in western prosperity, reflects rhetorically on the very decline of western-industrial civilisation. Tosatti’s pavilion needs fiction, theatre, artifice and pedestal. A factory transported with huge, fake fireflies that are only electric lights, music piped in, and a whole series of other theatrical and artificial gimmicks. When the real challenge and value, in the hands of each of us, is the ability to train new eyes, as fundamental tools to deal with our lives.
